Drivers Wanted/Short story

Drivers Wanted

He was walking down the street, resume in hand. Today was the day, he thought to himself, the day he would finally find a job. His name was Adrian and he was 30 years old. He had been jobless for about two months now and if he did not find a job soon, he and his wife were sure to lose everything. There debts were piling up everyday and the bank was threatening to take their house. This did not hinder Adrian’s confidence though he had a good feeling about today.

Just then, he turned the corner of the street to find his prayers had been answered. Right across the street was a sign hanging from the window of a limo service; it read ‘Drivers wanted’. His heart skipped a beat as he ran across the street to the building and quickly opened the door. It went as well as it could have gone. They hired him on the spot and asked him to start right away. The man that hired him gave him his uniform and he went to change in the back room, while he was there, he quickly called his wife and told her the good news.

She was very happy and told him she was going to make a big congratulation dinner for him when he got home. Adrian felt like a new chapter was about to start for him as he left to pick up his first client. He was enjoying the job already and could not help but wonder what kind of famous people he might get to drive around. Just as he was thinking this, he seen a very old, little man, walking down the sidewalk, he was walking slowly and carrying two extremely large packages wrapped in brown paper. He slowed down and watched the man; he was limping a bit and looked to be breathing heavily. Adrian could not help it, he knew what it could cost him but he did it anyway. He pulled up next to the old man and offered him a ride. The Old man accepted with all kinds of thanks and got into the front seat with his huge brown packages.

Before he drove away, he sat there for a moment looking at these huge packages and said to old man, “that is a heavy load to walk home with. Where do you live?” the old man replied, “across town, on 146th street, I had no money for a taxi and they took my licence away when I turned 80. I had to get these packages of medical supplies home to my wife and it could not wait. Thank you again for giving me a ride.” “Your welcome” Adrian said with a smile. Adrian knew if he drove the old man, all the way home, he was sure to miss picking up his client but he could not just drive him halfway. After a moments thought, he decided that some things are worth more then money and that he would drive the man all the way home.

When he arrived at the old mans house, he said goodbye and the old man climbed out of the limo with his giant packages, saying thank you again. He watched as a tiny woman greeted the old man at the door. She looked puzzled, but happy to see him home so soon. He must have told her that he got a ride because she looked over at the limo and waved at Adrian. He waved back and quickly drove off to pickup his client. Adrian was sure he had already missed his client, but went there anyway to make sure. He was lucky; the man was there still, waiting patently. The man got into the back of the limo and Adrian spilled out apologizes to him for being late. The man smiled at Adrian, removed his coat to reveal that he was a priest and said, “Sometimes it takes a little longer then it should to complete gods plans”.

The End.
